Feature Focus : Smarter Push Notifications

By | Mobile

Unlike popular mindset, 50% of mobile users see Push Notifications as helpful ! Survey

Push notifications are great to engage and re-engage. Take a second to ponder – how do you decide during your busy schedule which app to engage with ?  Which is the screen on your phone that you view the most ? – Your mobile’s notification screen ! Push notifications are a powerful form of mobile marketing & communicating relevant content to users.

Problem

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

If you get too “pushy,” you will get booted. On the other hand, if you underutilize push notifications, both you and your customers are losing out on value. We all know people who uninstalled an app just because too many notifications kept flooding their phones. So let’s look how push notifications can be made more helpful, smarter and user-friendly.

Personalized notification

Push notifications need to be targeted to the right user groups at the right point of time. The key to it is make it ‘Personalized’. No one wants to read a generic ‘broadcast’ message – not every day ! Talk to your consumers, use your analytics to learn their needs & behaviour. Present them benefits to choose from. For example – do they need a reminder of the session they RSVP ?  do they want want recommendations based on interests ?

Interactive notification

As important as it is to make it personalized, your notifications needs to drives your target audience to take action. Traditional notifications alert the user when a message came in, but you couldn’t do anything without leaving their current activity. With upgrades to Android & iOS users can reply or take action to a message within the banner. For example – When you push a poll as a notification, attendees can answer it in the notification screen though they might be reading news on another app. Or accept/reject an appointment request.

Image notification

A picture speaks a thousand words. This age old saying stands true, as humans are a set of visual creatures, who tend to comprehend and respond more to visual stimuli. What better, send notifications with an eye grabbing image that hits the bull’s eye.

Deep-link notification

How many times have we received push notifications and on-tap, it takes us to a screen that has no relevance to the message ? Start deep linking your push notifications. Deep Linking takes users to a specific area within the app instead of simply loading the app. For example – If you want to inform your audience about an exciting poll, ensure that once they click on the notification it takes them directly to the poll, not the home screen. This will ensure that more and more people participate in the poll.

In Conclusion

Studies have shown on average, Push notifications is 2x more effective than email campaigns. They can help you bring back users to your app, increase engagement, sales and retention. But don’t over do it. It is critical to utilize analytics to evaluate effectiveness of your notifications and iterate. Make sure you create messages that hold value to the end user. Leverage advanced techniques as listed above to create an impact and ROI for your brand. With latest updates on both Android and iOS (Apple) brands have immense power to increase lifetime value with their customers.

So next time don’t just “PUSH” a notification. Go beyond it !

Feature Focus : Gamification for your Users

By | Mobile

Gamification – the millennial buzz word that has garnered a lot of attention of late. Google it up and Wikipedia will be the first to add it. “Gamification is the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts.” Is there a better way to state it!

To put it in other words, gamification makes mundane tasks interesting, by awarding the users points or badges, taking them a level up and nudging their competitive bones.

Problem

Any platform where a lot people from different backgrounds are involved, constant and overall engagement is always an issue. It becomes all the more incommodious when the stakeholders involved are from different cultures and languages. It becomes quite challenging to draw users from their shells and to make them a buzzing part of the community.

Gamification Solution

However, as humans, constant and most importantly, instant gratification reassures each one of us. Like any conventional gaming platform, bring that to apps, and reward points to users based on their activities and interactions.

Points – User actions on a mobile app include adding posts on the timeline, sharing their responses through Polls, Quizzes and much more. Use this to your advantage by awarding points on the basis of the complexity of the activity performed.

Levels – Based on the points secured by the user, they can be taken a level up or down. As they participate and engage more, they move ahead and cross levels and so does their sense of achievement and competitive drive.

Badges – On the basis of these levels, users can be awarded badges. Initially, they could be tagged as Beginners and as they accumulate more points, badges such as Advanced, Expert, Guru can be awarded. Badges can be displayed on the user’s profile where their achievement are tagged and displayed.

Leaderboard – Users can then be ranked on the Leaderboard according to their points. This makes them wary of others achievements and motivates them to participate more. If the users are teamed up, then the leaderboard drives home a sense of community and team spirit.

Conclusion

All things considered, gamification if used right, can build a sense of community among the users and encourage them to be active contributors. If the tasks are annoying, then no matter how many ever points are awarded, the app will fail to indulge its audience. Instead of a single massive end goal, award points at regular intervals so that they do not lose interest or sense of achievement and move on. And always make sure that users are not just participating for the sake of flaunting their points.

Conveyed right, these user actions can also provide feedback for your business. Gamification can be the next big thing for your business by increasing efficiency and interactivity. Make sure you capitalize on it!

Clearly a majority of event owners, event planners & event organizers have embraced social media to market their events. But using a HASHTAG to attract and promote is scratching the surface. Very few events have realized the Power of the Hashtag DURING events.

Problem
Twitter, Instagram, Youtube and now SnapChat have gained popularity in Corporate conferences, Tradeshows, Weddings, Incentives and just about any large/small congregation. But is your hashtag being utilized by ALL attendees? We track tons of event hashtags, but less than 2% attendees use it at the event and most posts/tweets are by your social media agency. Yes it is that low! Why? Our experience clearly indicates LACK of gratification.
Adding live projections boosts contribution by as much as 300%.

Digital Walls – Social and more

2 essentials of any social media campaigns are hashtags & content. Digital walls collect this social media footprint in real time, including posts, images and videos into one interactive visual. These dynamic visuals are displayed at-venue that encourage people to share for a chance to show up on display. Don’t forget you can gamify it . Read more below.

An additional boost can be provided by integrating your mobile app to social. Using solutions like ours, users tweet with your hashtag directly from the app in addition to the private activity wall of your brand in the app. Our data has shown 10x more engagement with private activity walls compared to social media.

Using Social Walls your hashtags will no longer get lost inside a social bubble. And did we say you get to moderate ?

How our clients used Digital Walls ?

    • A Popular Singer took stage only after a certain number of tweets were posted by the audience LIVE. The Digital wall was used as a countdown while audience saw their own tweets projected.
    • Run photo contests with physical objects that are branded. For example. Instead of handing out free goodies, exhibitors asked visitors to Instagram a selfie with their brand
    • The Bangalore International airport used Digital Walls to get audience to engage which lead to the hashtag trending.

App…Why its better to be Native and not Hybrid.

By | Mobile

Why your app would be better by being Native and not Hybrid.

Have you ever lost your phone?

What’s the first thing you told yourself – “Hmm… I’ll find it another time. Not at this point.”

Definitely not!

Once you lose your phone, all other priorities go out the window. In today’s world that’s how much we value our mobile device. It’s with you every minute of the 24 hours.

That leads us to the question we need to ask ourselves as App promoters & App makers. If the value of a mobile device is so immense, shouldn’t Apps we deploy be more reliable, respond faster, and give all the answers your customers need as soon as possible?

Let’s skip the topic on why users download an App. 85% of consumers prefer mobile Applications over the mobile website – Source.

Don’t be the 15% who disagrees. So fast forward to once they download your mobile Application. What makes them keep it? Rather, the question to ponder and solve is how good is  user experience of your App – Only 28% say mobile Apps offer a better user experienceSource

In today’s “SnapChat” world, consumers expect snap reactions from their Apps. Apps that take full advantage of the built-in capabilities of their mobile devices – GPS, address book, camera, Bluetooth etc.,

Consumers want to chat real-time, view directions, set reminders, take pictures and much more. They use gestures, swipes, and are willing to uncover hidden actions that adhere to the guidelines of the respective platform. Your App needs to feel consistent with core native Apps on their devices.

Consumers expect proactive and relevant information within the context of their location at a particular time. Apps are expected to push personalized content based on their actions, with the ability to share content socially. App makers need to integrate emerging technologies like ibeacon, virtual reality.  Apps are expected to work offline and degrade gracefully – not show a loading spinner.

Let’s correct ourselves – these aren’t expectations anymore. This criteria will make or break the success of your App. The customer experience of your App is more important to your brand than you might think.  Apps that look great but perform poorly, will damage your brand.

79% of consumers would retry an App only once. Only 16% give it more than two attemptsSource.

You may get a chance to get it right once. but most certainly won’t get a second one.

Native app is the uncontested winner

The core of ensuring a great experience is using native Apps. Not hybrid ones that are HTML5 websites packaged into native wrappers. Can’t tell the difference? A simple eye test is to launch your Application in airplane mode and experience it., You are going to know the difference!

A few years back, it was expensive and time-consuming to build native mobile applications. In today’s ASAP world it’s easy to give up on getting a good App partner or choose a hybrid App approach. But with a platform like ours, cutting edge technology exist that provide custom branded Apps with authentic native experience at prices that translate to huge ROI.

Your users will DEMAND a great experience. They will open your App and expect it to be intuitive and responsive. Native Applications are the uncontested winner in both cases. To quote Mark Zuckerberg – “The biggest mistake we’ve made as a company is betting on HTML5 over native”

A long lasting relationship depends on the quality of each encounter – not just the first one. So do NOT compromise.
